How to Play Blackjack

The game of blackjack is played against the dealer, and the aim of the blackjack game is for the player to reach a card count of 21, or as close to it as possible, without exceeding that number. There is a wealth of different strategies and tips that you can learn to perfect your blackjack game.

A real or "natural" blackjack is made up of an Ace plus a card with the value of ten. This is the strongest hand possible and can't be beaten although the dealer may tie with the player.

Blackjack Card DenominationsCards 2 through 10 are counted at their face value. Jacks, Queens and Kings are valued at ten points each, and an Ace is counted as either one or eleven. A hand valued at 21 can be a winning hand, but it does not win against a "natural" blackjack.

How to Play Blackjack

The player and the dealer are each dealt two initial cards, and the dealer must always turn one card face up. If the player is lucky enough to get a "blackjack" or 21 with the first two cards, he "stands", meaning he doesn't draw any more cards. The dealer must stand with a card count of 17. If the player and the dealer tie, the hand is called a "push", and the player's original bet is returned to him. A player may draw up to nine cards, after his initial two, as long as his hand does not exceed 21.

A hand that goes over the 21 is called a "bust" and the player loses his bet. If after drawing nine cards the player's hand does not exceed 21, he automatically stands and the dealer plays his hand.

A player may "double down" on a hand with a value of 9, 10 or 11. "Doubling down" means that the player is betting that he will win with only one more card - a final card - and then he stands. The "double down" bet is equal to the player's original bet.

Should a player receive two initial cards of the same denomination, i.e. two jacks or two eights, he is allowed to "split" his hand and create two hands. A bet equal to his original bet is placed on his second hand, and the play continues. Aces may be split, but after splitting two Aces, should the player draw a card with a value of ten, it is not considered a "blackjack" because of the split.

If the dealer draws a blackjack after the player has drawn a card, split or doubled down, the player's entire bet is lost (his original bet plus the double down or split bets). There is an additional, side bet in blackjack termed the Insurance Bet. This bet means that the player is betting that the dealer will draw a Blackjack. This bet can be made if the dealer's first face-up card is an Ace. The Insurance bet costs half of the player's original bet. Should the dealer not achieve a blackjack, the Insurance bet is removed and the amount is deducted from the player's credit balance.
